STUDENT GOVERNMENT RETREAT |
|
Learning Outcome: |
Students will identify ways to navigate change and will be able to list steps to demystify the process.
|
Alicia Young If there’s one constant in life, it’s change. Sometimes we choose it: a new campus, a new city, a new relationship. As a Student Government leader, you are constantly dealing with modifications and changes on your campus. But change can be scary, even when we want it. Other times, it can seem like change is forced on us: a parent remarries, or we get transferred, or a surprise pregnancy announces itself. But in that state of flux lies opportunities loaded with potential—to grow, to challenge ourselves, to discover hidden strengths and passions. This session will give students the tools to help them be more open-minded when it comes to new ideas and opportunities in not only their lives, but when working with their team members as well. We’ll explore myriad ways to embrace change today, from small tweaks in our daily routines, to moderate stretches in how we communicate with others, to times when we fully reach out, and stand out of our comfort zone. It’s in these moments that we harness the power and promise of change: to tap a new side to ourselves and to get more—much more—out of life.

Dave Kelly Student Governance: Lobbying to Make Your Voice Heard!
Students have a voice and legislators at the local, state, and national levels need to hear it. Recent laws limiting the scope of student activities, involvement in campus committees and decisions, and educational requirements for campus organizations have shown that students have to provide a perspective, information, and knowledge to help shape decisions that affect them. The presenter is a former campus legislative affairs director and chief lobbyist for a state student government association. Bring your issues and your questions for expert direction!

Alicia Young
Parasol Press LLC - www.savvylife.net • 510-292-5544
We each have a personal brand, and whether or not we realize it, it’s broadcasting to the world each moment who we are: how we do business, how we deal with conflict or stress, the type of intern or employee we’d make—even the type of friend we’re likely to be. Social media, uploading our lives and an overall blurring of social boundaries means our brand is on display constantly. This session will explore small gestures with big impact: the interactive “giveaways” we often don’t know we’re conveying to others. Do they boost you, or betray you? Show the world your best self! You’ll leave with top tips for authentically conveying your best—in person, online, at networking events, and job interviews, plus some key ideas for being on camera. Whatever the setting, your brand will shine through!

We will then look at some of the myths vs facts of hazing. After which, I'll challenge the students to come up with ways in which they can initiate new members w/o the need to haze. Because if they don't, some years from it's a strong possibility that these organizations will dissolve due to lawsuits that the organizations cannot financially support! Dave Kelly Crafty Service: Engaging Students Who Are Not Engaged
Statistics show that more than 80% of students are looking for service opportunities when they get to college, yet only 40% of all students are satisfied with the avenues of service engagement available to them. This session will demonstrate how Student Government Organizations can provide several easy service projects that can be done at a table top in a high traffic area, as part of an entertainment program on campus, in residence halls, or at workshops and other leadership events. The focus is hands-on projects that can have an impact in ways both and small and can be used to get students engaged who may not choose to turn out for a large event, but are willing to offer 1, 3, or 5 minutes of their time. These types of projects are easily replicatible on your campus and are the foundation of the APCA Serves!
